Notwithstanding the pious spirit in the city, chain snatchers and pick-pocketers devoted their energies towards relieving pilgrims of their valuables. The police said petty crimes were on the rise during the two-day stay of the palkhis.u00a0

Policemen in plain clothes were deployed at various places on the palkhi route. Crime Branch officials said 33 persons, including six women, suspected of pick-pocketing and chain-snatching were taken into custody yesterday. The police recovered a gold chain from a 20-year-old youth. Eight gold rings were also seized from others.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Anant Shinde said, "Three men were arrested on Sunday for chain-snatching. Theu00a0 suspects were active in Vishrantwadi and Yerawada, even as the palkhi procession was going on."
