In three separate incidents that sent shockwaves across Pune, girls below 10 years of age were raped, murdered and attacked (see Horror Tales) yesterday.
In the first incident, Nisha (name changed), a 10-year-old girl, was raped and strangled in broad daylight in the heart of the city in Narayan Peth yesterday.
Chocolate wrappers
The girl's mother, Alka (name changed), a nurse, who works at Mohiniraj Yashwant Kulkarni's bungalow, found her body on the terrace at around 1 pm when she went searching for her daughter. Nisha was holding on to some leaves in her hands, which were not from the plants in the compound. According to sources, this indicates the girl must have been raped at some other place. There were also chocolate wrappers strewn on the terrace. The police are questioning Kulkarni about the incident.
Epileptic fit
In an exclusive talk with MiD DAY, Kulkarni said Nisha was alive when Alka spotted her. "As she was unable to sit, we took her inside the bungalow and called up our family doctor. We thought Nisha had had an epileptic fit.
We gave her ghee and sugar on the advice of the doctor. But she did not respond. Then we took her to Poona Hospital," said Kulkarni.
He added that she died moments after doctors inspected her. However, hospital sources said Nisha was brought dead to the hospital.
Senior Inspector Moticha-nd Rathore of the Farasakh- ana police station told MiD DAY, "Nisha's post mortem report states she was raped and strangled. We have taken Kulkarni for medical tests and are awaiting reports."
Kulkarni also revealed that Alka was supposed to stay in the bungalow between October 13 and 19, as another nurse who came during the night was on leave.
Said Alka, "I found my daughter's body when I stepped out to get lunch for Kulkarni and his bedridden wife. I have been working for them for two-and-a-half years. They are very kind to me and treated me and my daughter like family." Police said the investigations are on.
