Education board likely to transfer teacher who beat student to 'difficult' school

Afteru00a0MiD DAY reported how an eight-year-old girl was left with a swollen hand after being beaten by her teacher at a municipal school, authorities of the education board swung into action and launched an inquiry into the incident.

Surekha Pujari, the girl beaten by teacher Bajrang Thithe at Kasturba Gandhi municipal school in Koregaon Park, was still in great pain when an NGO learnt from her she was hit with a wooden ruler and filed a police complaint.
"Thithe has admitted to beating the girl and an inquiry has also been launched into his past conduct," said Sangeeta Tiwari, chairperson of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) school board. "It has come to our notice that he may have done such a thing in the past as well. Though it isn't likely that he will be suspended as he has served for 31 years and is retiring next year, he will be given strict punishment."

Yesterday MiD DAY reported how Surekha was beaten by her teacher for getting up from her seat without permission. Surekha's right hand was injured in the incident.

According to Tiwari, the most likely action would be the teacher's transfer to the PMC's most 'unwanted' school.

"Despite his being in one of the best schools of the PMC, he behaved in an undignified manner. So now we will transfer him to a school where no one wants to work and life will get difficult for him," said Tiwari.

Circulars to schools
Ramchandra Jadhav, PMC education board chief, said all schools, including private and public schools, would
be sent circulars on corporal punishment.

"We will resend circulars banning corporal punishment in schools and remind teachers of strict action against such incidents," said Jadhav.

Teacher's arrest
Following the complaint filed by child rights activists Manish Shroff and Nakul Kate on behalf of Surekha, Thithe was arrested by officials of the Bund Garden police station.

"He has been booked under Section 23 of the Juvenile Justice Act. He was arrested and later released him on bail," said Suhas Nadgauda, senior police inspector.
