Railways to probe into Chennai train mishap

Even as preliminary investigations in to the Chennai train mishap point at a possible human error that left 10 people dead and almost 83 injured on Tuesday night, the Railways have now ordered an in-depth investigation into the matter.

"The southern zone Commissioner of Railway Safety will conduct an inquiry to find the cause of the accident. Overlooking signals and breaking speed restrictions seem to be the prima facie cause of the accident," said an official from the Railway Ministry.

At least 10 people were killed and 83 injured in Tuesday's train accident

The families of those who lost their lives and were trapped in the accident have been heading to the local government hospitals to find their loved ones. Meanwhile, the Chennai-Bangalore train services were affected throughout the day.

The Bangalore Railways put out facilities for those immediately heading to Arakkonam and also diverted and rescheduled several trains.

"Due to the accident at Chitteri, we have diverted and rescheduled five trains.

The schedules of Muzaffarpur-Yeswanthpur Express, Gwahati-Bangalore Express, Bangalore-Chennai Mail, Chennai-Shiradi Express and Howrah-Yeshwanthpur Express have been changed," said C Narendra, Publicity Inspector, SWR, Banglaore.

Besides, the KSRTC too put out extra buses on different stretches to help passengers reach their destinations faster.
