The incident happened at Jalvayu Vihar in Noida Sector 21 on Thursday. The officer, Wing Commander (retd) S Swahney, (70), set himself on fire in his house and died on the spot. He was living with his wife Yasmeen.

"The deceased was suffering from depression for a long time. His son had died in a train accident in 1992 and his daughter was living in Mumbai.

On Thursday, he committed suicide in the balcony while his wife was in another room. Due to her poor eyesight, she couldn't figure out what was happening and by the time she realised what had happened, Swahneyu00a0 was dead. We received the call about this incident at around 11 am. The body was sent for the post-mortem," said a police officer.

"When we heard Yasmeen shouting, we rushed to the house but by that time it was too late. We called the ambulance and the cops," said Rishikesh, guard of the society.
