Flats given on contract to employees by civic body have to be vacated within two months of retirement, but dozens flout this rule

Jayappa Kamble, a former Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) official, retired six years ago. However, he continues to live at the PMC Housing Society on Shankarsheth Road in Swargate. He is not the only one. There are several like Kamble who have retired from their post but continue to live along with their families at the flats given to them by the PMC.

MiD DAY had reported on PMC officials who sub-let flats allotted to them in Koregaon Park by the civic body.
Avinash Jadhav, corporator from Ward No 83, said he knew that retired officials had not vacated flats given to them on contract while in service. "I need to raise the issue," he said.

The PMC Housing Colony flats are given to employees under the condition that they vacate them after retirement.u00a0 Under Section 60 of the Bombay Provincial Municipal Act, the tenant should vacate his quarters within two months. "Despite sending notices to these tenants, no legal action has been taken against them," Jadhav said.

Kamble said: "I do not have any other place to live in the city. I pay Rs 1,200 as monthly rent and am living here with my family for the last 25 years. Earlier, I used to pay a monthly rent of Rs 30."

Jadhav said that 87 of the 323 flats in the colony are still occupied by those who had retired years ago. "Some of them are not only retired but also running beauty parlours or other private businesses without any fear," he said. "The PMC can file a case of encroachment and remove them legally."
