The Indian rupee on Wednesday strengthened by five paise at 47.69 against the US currency in opening trade on anticipation of fresh capital inflows by funds amid dollar selling by exporters.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market, the domestic unit gained five paise to quote at 47.69 a dollar in early trade over the previous close of 47.74/75.

Forex dealers said hopes of increased capital inflows by foreign funds as local bourses may open higher in line with other Asian equity markets influenced the rupee sentiment.

Besides, dollar's weakness against major currencies overseas and dollar selling by exporters also led to a rise in rupee.
