School asks unhappy parents to seek leaving certificates

The tension between parents of New Horizons Scholars School in Airoli and the school management seems to have taken a turn for the worse. MiD DAY had reported the story ‘Parents protest fee hike at New Horizons School’ earlier this month.

Up in arms: A group of 70 parents affiliated to the PTA protested outside the gates of New Horizons Scholars School over a fee hike and improperly held PTA elections

With three weeks having elapsed since and the school not relenting its stance on the fee hike, a group of 70 parents from the PTA staged another stir outside the school on the morning of August 24 over the hike, as well as irregularities in the PTA elections.

Parents claim that the school has still not held a proper PTA meeting to elect representatives for each class. They also complain that the management has not yet provided parents with an explanation for a fee hike.

Slapped with late fees
Vijay Joshi, a parent demonstrating outside the school, said, “Even though we demanded an explanation for the fee hike and proper functioning of the PTA, none of the issues have been dealt with. The management has also presented us with late fees of Rs 3,570. Until we get an explanation on how the fee is being used and the reason for the hike, we will not give them any more money.”

After the protest, the school slapped parents with an additional late fee of Rs 30 per day. This amounts to Rs 3,570 for 119 days. Parents even received emails telling them that if parents were unhappy with the school they could ask for a leaving-certificate and remove their wards.Manohar Shetty, parent of a student in Std VI, said, “Sending parents emails stating that we can ask for leaving certificate if we are not satisfied with the working of the school makes me feel like the management is trying to threaten us. However, we have decided to continue to protest until we get answers.”

A few representatives went to meet the school principal Tanuja Bhatt and school director Jyothi Nayar to decide on a date when parents could meet with the administrator. But they were asked to return on Wednesday to discuss the issues. The parents can only hope that today, all their queries will be answered and all doubts cleared.Despite repeated attempts, the principal of New Horizons School was not available for comment.u00a0
