Moga: A schoolteacher was today mercilessly beaten up by five miscreants in which gun shots were exchanged while he was on his way to school at Burj Hamira of the district, police said.

Government school teacher Nirmal Singh, a resident of Patto Hira, was severely beaten by the assailants after being dragged out of his car, police said, adding that gun shots were also fired from both the sides. After the victim was waylaid by the assailants, he took out his revolver and allegedly fired at them, but they overpowered him and snatched his revolver and fired back at him, police said.

The teacher, whose leg got fractured in the fight, had been hospitalised and stated to be out of danger. The assailants later escaped in their car, police said. Meanwhile, police, on the statement of the injured teacher, have registered a criminal case against five persons under section 307 (attempt to murder), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 325 (grievous injuries) of the IPC and also under the Arms Act.

Investigations revealed that the teacher was attacked after his mother Mahinder Kaur, who is a sarpanch (village head), opposed selection of Barjinder Singh, one of the accused, as president of a local college. No arrest has been made in this connection so far, police said.
