In a move to bring joy and a feeling of equality to everyone around this Independence Day,u00a0 Vande Bhaaratham, a city-based NGO, will be hosting an event on August 14. The dignitaries at the function will be the rag pickers and pourakarmikas (garbage cleaners) from the city. The Freedom Fest 2011 is a MiD DAY supported initiative, which will see all the big politicians, but none of them will be on the dais.

"We want to capture free India, from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, in its full essence. The initiative would not focus on any big names as this is an event for and by the common man. All the 200 government schools in the city have been invited and although all political parties have been invited, they will be seated along with the common man. We do not want the general crowd to treat Independence Day as just another holiday," said B R Sujay, a key member of the organising team.

The event will showcase the talents of cultural teams from across the city and feature an assortment of events."The event will conclude with the recital of patriotic songs and the national flag will be hoisted at the stroke of midnight, which will be symbolic to the actual way our country achieved freedom," said event organiser B H Lokesh. With plans to celebrate the spirit of freedom in a unique way, over 5,000 Bangaloreans are expected to turn up at the event.
