The 30-share index rose by 32.32 points to 17,648.04 points in the first five minutes of trading. The wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty gained 8.85 points at 5271.95 points at the same time.
Marketmen said trading sentiment improved on expectations that quarterly financial results to be released next week might be attractive. They said a firm trend in Hong Kong also supported the trading sentiment.
