At a time when chain snatching cases in the city have almost doubled this year, Lashkar police station has made a major breakthrough by arresting a notorious chain snatcher who has one of the highest number of such incidents registered against him.
Soon after the arrest, it was learnt that 10 incidents have been registered against the accused Babbu alias Nizamuddin Sheikh (24), a resident of Mithanagar, Kondhwa.
Police recovered 225 gms gold worth Rs 3.5 lakh, which he had sold to a local jeweller.
Police Inspector Balkrishana Shinde said, "An informer tipped us that a notorious chain snatcher was doing a recce of the Cantonment area. We laid a trap near Bhopale Chowk and nabbed him."
Seven cases of jewellery snatching were registered against him at Swargate police station, while two cases were registered at Kondhwa and one at Lashkar.
DCP Satish Khandare told MiD DAY, "It is a major catch for Lashkar police station considering the rising chain snatching cases in the city."
