Though expensive, the Pune Film Exhibitors' Association (PFEA) is thinking of installing a Rs 40-lakh digital 3D projection system in their theatres to attract the crowds.

The 3D version of Hollywood blockbuster Avatar is presently doing good business at major multiplexes in the city. The 2D version is playing at 23 other cinemas.

"This is the technology of tomorrow and we need to change with the times," said Sadanand Mohol, president of PFEA.

The city has a total of 18 single screen theatres and many are willing to make the new technological changes in their theatres. "We are also looking for an option as the technology can be shared with each other by investing partly," he said.

Mohol will be calling a special meeting of the exhibitors in Pune to discuss this issue.

Prakash Chaphalkar, partner, Mangala and City Pride Multiplex, said that digital 3D projection is different from the conventional 3D, which is the most recent technology and is even a bit too costly.

Ajay Sarpotdar, president of Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Chitrapat Mahamandal, said that the new technological changes were always welcomed in Pune. "Digital 3D will also become an integral part of the movie-going crowd.
The change will start from the big metro cities including Pune," he said.

Mohan Tapre, partner in Vasant Cinema, said, "I will be installing it in my theatre in the near future."
