The incident occurred on Saturday night at Pimpri chowk when the builder, Pravin Basant Totlani, was returning home in his car and had an altercation with a group of young people, who allegedly challenged him to come to Bhatnagar if he wanted to pursue the matter.
The young people were still around, and the police said they attacked the builder in spite of their presence.
The police said the builder had to fire in the air to keep off his attackers. Five of the assailants were subsequently arrested. "The police arrested four of the five assailants on the spot," said DCP Dnyaneshwar Chavan (Zone III).
On why the police could not prevent the attack on the builder, Chavan said it happened too fast. "The police can't read minds," said Chavan. "The attack was spontaneous, but the policemen got acting immediately after it happened."
The people involved in the assault on the builder were identified as Hemant Waghere (25), a resident of Monica bungalow in Pimpri, Baban Prakash Ranvare (30), a resident of Baner, Parshuram Topne (30) of Bhimnagar in Pimpri, Jaynath Phadtare (27) of Kasba Peth, and Pinki Hareh Kruplani (19) of Sadhu Vaswavi Niketan in Pimpri.
The incident took place as Totlani was returning home from Pune and his car was hit by a vehicle with the six people in it. When Totlani questioned them, the six allegedly assaulted him.
Totlani escaped and approached the police chowky nearby and came back with three police constables, but the young people again tried to assault him as well as the police with an iron rod.
The police said Totlani's Innova car was also ransacked.
When Totlani fired in the air from his revolver, the accused tried to flee, but the police managed to catch them.
The five arrested people were remanded in police custody till Wednesday.
