Go moony with innovative mocktails and a new range of dishes at the August Moon festival at Mandarin Trail

THE government and the army are terrified of our yellow-skinned neighbours. But the common citizens love

them. Some of us love their erstwhile party chairman (Mao, in whose name half of our country is embroiled in violence) and some of us just can't get enough of their food, which we have Indianised in such a manner that even the Chinese would not dare to stake a claim on them.

And reason why I was curious to check out the new August Moon menu in Mandarin Trail. During this festival, families come together to celebrate the end of harvest season.

The bar menu looked very celebratory with everything from Grey Goose to Absolut to Jim Beam and single malts like Glenlevit and Genfiddich. Mocktails will surely catch a teetotaller's attention with names like Virgin Lady, Pink Woman (didn't taste too great) and Italian Smooch.

Au00a0shaky start
I started in feast mode too, trying to experiment with Baileys Irish Cream and Chinese food. The result is a see-saw ride, sometimes sweet and sometimes spicy (the liqueur and the food when had in turns). I tried celery and pepper chicken from the starter menu. It was not spicy enough and was also a little too salty, spoiling the taste. The Shanghai style French beans and prawns with vermicelli noodles made up for the initial disappointment, though. Also good were the golden fried mushroom and prawn coriander dimsums. For main course, I tried some chicken and corn fried rice which was cooked right. The fish in the Sliced fish with red and green pepper didn't seem fresh enough.

Go moon time
All said and done, the moon cake, the special dessert, definitely deserves mention. Yes, it has been Indianised too (vanilla ice cream is being served with it). It has a crunchy outer layer made of flour and cornflour and has a filling of seedless dates, walnuts and dry fruits. Even if you miss out on the entire menu (ideally don't), do not miss out on this one.
