Sixty-five-year-old Rakesh Chauhan and his wife were asked by society members and local political activists to vacate their 1BHK-rented house in Indrayani Cooperative Society, Kothrud on January 31.u00a0u00a0u00a0

Chauhan says, the society members said they would have to vacate the property because their son Sagar (26) has been accused of theft. "We were asked to vacate our flat without any legal reason. We do have an ongoing legal case with our landlord, Suresh Ganpat Savant. However, in 2006, the court ordered that we could not be asked to vacate the flat unless the judge directs us to do so," said Chauhan.

Son's a thief
"It is true that our son has been charged with theft, but we are not in touch with him. Some residents in the society even asked the tuition teacher to stop teaching our six-year-old grandson. Why are we being made to suffer," asked Chauhan.

Savant claimed he was unaware of the incident. "The society members suffered because of their son. I would say they are justified in asking the family to move," he added.

Old problem
Chauhan said the society had been harassed them on several other occasions. Chauhan approached Commissioner of Police Dr Satypal Singh for assistance. "The commissioner has assured me that if I possess a court order, nobody would be able to dispossess me of the rented flat,"u00a0 he claimed.

S Gaikwad, the chairman of the Indrayani Co-operative Society could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
