State to colleges: get accredited

State govt's new rule makes it compulsory for colleges to be rated by a national quality ratings body for them to keep university affiliation

According to a government resolution (GR) issued on October 8, all colleges that are operating in the state will have to get rated by a national quality ratings body such as the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) or the National Board of Accreditation (NBA).

To do so, the colleges will automatically have to upgrade their academic infrastructure, facilities and resources for students thus guaranteeing quality education.

It would also put a check on fake and bogus claims made by colleges.

According to estimates, about one-third colleges in the state have not got accredited so far but the number might be fewer in case of Pune University because it has made accreditation a point of consideration while giving affiliation.

The GR (a copy of which is with MiD-Day) states that those colleges whose accreditation has expired should get it renewed and newer colleges should be given only 45 days or until November 30 to file their applications.
The GR goes on to state that those colleges that fail to comply would stand to lose their affiliation to the respective university that they belong to.

Idea welcome
Dr Shrikant Gupta principal of Garware College told MiD DAY that it's a good idea to go in for accreditation not only for students but colleges as well.

"We conducted several activities in the past but it was never recognised or documented by us. Now we have started maintaining records of our activities because we have to make a presentation to the committee and know how far we have come. Besides, it feels good to get validated for our work through NAAC," he said.
