"I have not decided yet whether to join politics or not," Dutt, who is in Kashmir shooting for Rahul Dholakia directed movie 'Lamhaa', told a local cable TV network.
Priya, a Congress MP, had yesterday voiced disappointment at her actor brother's decision to contest elections on a Samajwadi Party ticket saying that their father was a Congressman and the family had always been associated with Congress.
Sanjay said his father, late Sunil Dutt, was more of a social worker than a politician and he used politics as a means to serve the people.
Dutt said he has quit smoking and alcohol as part of his New Year resolution. "I have quit smoking and drinking since the turn of the year - let us see what happens in future," Dutt said, adding he is determined to stick to his decision.
The actor, who has been embroiled in a number of controversies since his early days in Bollywood, including a conviction for possessing illegal arms, swears by non-violence and Gandhigiri.
"Gandhigiri and non-violence is the best way to live. Violence leads to destruction and nothing else," the actor, who made the Gandhian way of life a new fad through his 'Munna Bhai' films, said in his message to the youth of the state.
He said the next movie in the 'Munna Bhai' series is likely to be produced by 2010 as nothing has been finalised yet, including the script.
Asked which has been the most difficult phase in his life, Dutt said his entire life has been difficult.
"But I think the conviction (in the Mumbai Blast case) was the most difficult phase," he added.
On the beauty of Kashmir, he said he would tell directors and producers to shoot more films in the Valley.
