Opposition members in the BBMP council were united for the first half of the meeting while taking on Mantri Developers, but went separate ways when the issue of garbage came up for discussion. The ruling BJP in the council is likely to give the go-ahead for the garbage tender to the existing 56 members of garbage contractors headed by Gopinath Reddy.

The same team had earlier taken the garbage-clearing contract and was covering the wards as a whole. Now however, the ruling BJP in council wants to divide things and allocate three to each contract, but the opposition does not want to see the plan to go through. Opposition members say that it would result in disparity and increase the chances of mismanagement among the contractors.

JD(S) leader in the opposition Padmanabha Reddy demanded that garbage-clearing contract be given ward wise, which will ensure smooth work and allow better monitoring of contractors and officials. "The present idea of cutting down 15 garbage tippers (lorry) to seven will not go well in the city. Also, in such a case, if the contract is distrubuted on three wards each basis, we cannot keep tabs on operations and garbage will pile up," Reddy said.

Increase pay
The Congress, which was hell bent on issuing the contract to ward level, staged a sit in dharna in the council. A Congress leader said that the present idea of giving Rs 350 crore for garbage clearing is insufficient and does not leave much for the Pourakarmika (garbage collectors). Also, the payment of Rs 2,000 to each Pourakarmika should be raised to Rs 6,000 as per Central Government guidelines.
