Boys are doing wheelies on busy Jayanagar roads, endangering life and limb, but the cops aren't even aware

A boy doing wheelies crashed into and injured a bus conductor last week, but got away scot-free.

Many in the neighbourhood are nervous to step out in the afternoons, when young boys zip through the roads on their motorbikes, with no care for other road users. Around noon, on the busy roads of Jayanagar 4th T Block (near RV College) and Tilaknagar (near the BMTC bus depot), 10 to 15 young men show off their wheeling skills almost every day. MiD DAY captured their stunts on video last week.

The boys on the bikes are desperate to impress the girls, and in the process are endangering the lives of citizens walking along the roads of this residential area.

Then two weeks ago, two boys doing wheelies crashed into each other in front of the BMTC Canteen. "People who had been watching them thrashed them and handed them over to the police," said the cashier of the Manjushree BMTC canteen.

"Fridays are particularly bad. We are scared because these boys come riding like maniacs," said Sujata Sridhar, who lives in the neighbourhood.

Three riders on a bike is common, and they don't wear helmets.

Police clueless

Venkataswamy, inspector at the Mico Layout traffic police station, didn't know anything about the menace in his jurisdiction.

"They can't do wheelies because of the road humps. If we come to know of it, we will definitely file a case under Section 279 for rash and negligent driving and fine them Rs 300," he told MiD DAY.

Inspector Srinidhi of the Tilaknagar police station, said there was little he could do to curb the menace. "We can only give them a notice and hand them over to the traffic police," he told MiD DAY.

BMTC drivers are scared they will be blamed for any accident. "The police must act," said Lingaraju, manager, BMTC. "And citizens must complain when they see these boys riding wildly."

Wheelie tragedy
Mohammed Mukram (21) was shot dead last December by army guards when he was trying to escape from an army officer's compound. He was doing wheelies on M G Road when the police confronted him. He tried to run away from them, and ended up hiding in an army officer's house.
