Big name ice-cream brands should be shivering in their boots as this super-sundae parlour hits Bangalore

Started in 1948 in San Francisco, Swensen's has over 300 ice-cream outlets worldwide and has now entered the lucrative Indian market, with its first in Bangalore. Are we lucky? The Guide hopped by to find out.
Breaking the ice
Greeted by friendly staff at the front door, you can't help but smile at the crowds of young families, cosy couples and enthusiastic ice-cream buffs tucking into a colourful assortment of Swensen's specialty sundaes. With over fifty house sundaes, ice-cream flavours, fruits and toppings, any sweet tooth will be on cloud nine on their way to a delicious frozen heaven.
An earthquake of an ice-cream
Aside from the fact that you can hardly go wrong with ice-cream, the sundaes at Swensen's are truly decadent and will have the eyes of even the biggest sundae scooper bulging. We started with the house-specialty, The Earthquake (Rs 390) that was the biggest sundae we have ever laid our eyes on. With eight scoops of assorted ice-cream, pineapple, jam, hot chocolate fudge and toffee toppings, whipped cream and maraschino cherries, this is enough to feed a large family. The mixture of all of the flavours made it hard to distinguish what exactly was in that particular mouthful, nevertheless it was completely delicious.
Nutty scoops
The Nutty Crispy Tower (Rs 125) was a winner for anyone who loves caramel and nuts. Thick syrupy caramel sauce, crushed almonds and granola clusters were crunchy and delectable but not too sweet with the coffee ice-cream it came with. Although we don't really dig coffee flavoured ice-creams, this one wasn't a wrong choice as it didn't make the whole sundae sickly sweet, just tasty, crunchy and mouth-watering.
Swensen's also offers a 1970's fruit fondue (Rs 299) with ice cream and chocolate dipping sauce that melts over a candle emitting white smoke on your table. The rockmelon, banana and cherries were fresh and lovely to eat with the chocolate sauce but it proved a little tricky dipping ice-cream into warm chocolate sauce. Also, after about five minutes of melting over a candle flame, the sugars in the chocolate started to burn, leaving a bitter and gritty taste.
Frozen kiddy treats
For the little ones, a variety of children's sundaes are available. We tried the Sweet Princess (Rs 69) which was a cute little strawberry concoction with ice-cream, strawberry sauce, wafers, whipped cream and wafers made into the shape of a rabbit.
For the undecided, Swensen's can also put together a sundae of your choice but it won't be easy. What with over 25 different types of ice-cream flavours alone, you'll need some time to choose. But a personal recommendation goes to the Midnight Brownies, Rock at Heart, Cookies & Cream and the Sticky Chewy Chocolate. The flavours and sundaes available at Swensen's will really have you re-thinking your choice of where to get your sugar hit next time and you'll be coming back for more, like we have.u00a0
