Technical consultants appointed by the IT Department of the state government in Mumbai will now oversee the installation of 1,000 to 1,100 CCTVs in the area under the jurisdiction of the city police commissionerate, which includes Pimpri-Chinchwad.
Collector Vikas Deshmukh yesterday said the decision was taken in a high-powered committee meeting held in Mumbai on Tuesday where the state government agreed in principal to install CCTV cameras in the city and Pimpri-Chinchwad.u00a0

Chief Secretary J K Banthia was present at the meeting. “The decision about the spots for installing the cameras will be taken by the high-powered committee when the technical consultants will submit their reports after studying the infrastructure of the city,” Deshmukh said.
The consultants have to submit their reports before the committee within two weeks.
Rs 30 crore project
Deshmukh said the total cost of the project would be Rs 30 crore, of which Rs 10 crore would be borne by the state government and Rs 7.5 crore and Rs. 2.05 crore by the PMC and the PCMC respectively. The District Collectorate will pitch in with Rs 10 crore.
“Expenses will also be met through the MLA, MLC and MP funds. We will get Rs 30 lakh from each MLA and MLC, and Rs 75 lakh from MPs for the installation of CCTVs,” Deshmukh said.
The District Collector said the decision about the maintenance expenses of these CCTV cameras would be taken by the high-powered committee.
“The installation of CCTVs is really not a big deal, but the maintenance expenses of the installed CCTVs for the next five years is the real challenge, and therefore the decision will be taken whether there should be a separate budget in the state’s general budget,” Deshmukh said. u00a0
