A 16-year-old maid was rescued by a local organisation yesterday, while she was trying to leave the city after her employer allegedly slapped her. Sita (name changed) is an Assam resident, and has been in the city for the last one and a half years. She had come to work for her employers, a couple, through a Delhi-based firm.

In safe hands: Sita said she was tired of the city and just wanted to

A few days after she came to the city, she realised she didn't want to live here without her parents. But her employer kept refusing giving her one reason after other.u00a0 Interestingly, during this period, her employers went to Delhi, leaving her behind.

"When I asked my employer to let me go, she slapped me," said Sita. In her desperation, she stole some money, and went to the Bangalore East railway station. Since she is uneducated, and doesn't know the language, she was at loss. Finally, an auto driver came to her rescue, and informed Jayakarnataka Sanghatane, an NGO. Sita was taken to the Pulakeshinagar police station by the NGO workers.

Sumit Dhar, the employer said, "She stole money from us. My wife, who is pregnant, didn't slap her, but was just asking her about the money."

Sita said,"I want to go back to my parents." PSI Bhairappa from Banasawadi police station said, "Before they brought her here, Sumit had filed a missing complaint. Sita alleges that Sumit's wife slapped her, but he denies it. We are investigating."

C M Thajuddhin, member, Jayakaranataka said, "Lot of girls who work as maids face harassment, but never disclose it to anyone. We are just doing a social service." Sita will be sent to a remand home until the matter is settled.
