A 16-year-old girl commits suicide over a remote control but neighbours took in the newsu00a0 with cold indifference.

"I have often seen the girl. Last night, when the police arrived on the scene, I peeped out curiously for a while and then, went inside. In the morning, I learned of the suicide. I have little association with my neighbours," said a neighbour Ratna.

Another neighbour said, "What am I to do with this suicide? I set out for work early in the day and return late. It's sad."

Yet another said, "I can only say she's a decent girl. No more."

Concerned

However, Jayaram Reddy, her commerce professor at BES College, Jayanagar, was shocked. "Annapurna was in section A and was a very hardworking student. She was regular and had a good academic track record," Jayaram said.

"But she was withdrawn and shy. She also had few friends. It surprises me that she could have taken such a hasty, thoughtless decision," he said.

Jayaram added, "We will certainly reiterate that students be responsible to themselves and their family for their decisions. Quibbles over trivial matters shouldn't be allowed to affect anyone this much."

What happened on sad Sunday

Annapurna hanged herself on Sunday following a fight with her brother Vinay over the remote control.

The argument had turned violent and their mother had to intervene and separate the two. Soon after her mother and brother left her, Annapurna locked herself in the next room and hanged herself using a dupatta.

"The suicide occurred at 8.30 pm," said Naveen Kulkarni, inspector at Tyagaraja Nagar police station. "The family tried reviving her with water, and managed to take her to the nearby Bharati Nursing Home only at 9 pm," he said.

At the hospital the girl was declared brought dead.

"We received the call half an hour later at 9.30 pm," Naveen said.
