The Malleshwaram police, who were groping in the dark about the attack on Srirampuram former councillor Govindaraju by a gang of armed men on June 21, received a tip-off that a 28-year-old youth was boasting of his misdeeds in a local bar.
A police team rushed to the bar, and picked up S Babu alias Vandre Babu, and a detailed enquiry led him to confess to the crime.

Cops later rounded up his associates M Vinod, AGS Gopi and Lingaraju from Saidapet Chennia, who had taken shelter in Chennai.
"The accused accept suparis for a meager amount of Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000," said PI M Srinivas.
"Initially, the gang was not cooperating to reveal who is behind the attack, but when their mobile number details were verified, we zeroed in on A Kumar alias Bayappa (33), whom they have called frequently a day before and after the attack."
"We picked up Kumar, and after detailed questioning, he named V Nagraj, alias Bomb Naga, a rowdy-turned-politician (ex-councillor who recently lost BBMP elections from Prakash Nagar ward), added PI M Srinivas.
According to the police, Govindaraju, Nagraj's archrival, had not only won the local council elections against him, but also helped his friends to defeat his associates in other wards.
Govindaraju had also helped a woman candidate to contest and win against Nagraj's candidate and helped her to get required documents to file for the nominations.

This had irked Nagraj, and with the help of his brother-in-law A Kumar, he met Babu and offered
Rs 1.5 lakh supari to eliminate Govindaraju.
Babu contacted his gang in Chennai and brought them to Bangalore to study Govindaraju's movements. The gang attacked Govindaraju when he was having coffee at Malleshwaram on June 21.
The attack lasted less than a minute. Onlookers were too stunned to react. Govindaraju escaped with nasty cuts on his face and hands.
Nagraj is still absconding. A rowdy from Srirampura area, Bomb Naga has several cases pending against him. He got his name because of an incident when he hurled bombs at a rival gang in the early 90's.
When he did not get a ticket from the political party, Nagraj fielded eight candidates including his wife, brother, sister-in-law and his close associates.
