Assistant Sub-Inspector G R Ugale said the sisters had asked the tempo driver for a lift at Kanhe Phata at 4 am saying they wanted to go to Lonavla. Ugale said a truck carrying sand hit the tempo.

"While Rupali died on the spot, Chaitrali was taken to Sassoon and her condition is reportedly serious," said Ugale. "The two girls were on their way for some work to Lonavla and lived in Ahire village near Khadakwasla."
In another accident, a 25-year-old woman was killed on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway yesterday. The mishap occurred opposite the Khadki post office at 9.55 am. The deceased was identified as Amrin Izaz Ahmed (25), a resident of Bhosari.

According to her family, she was staying with her two daughters at her mother's residence in Dighi and was on her way to meet some relatives in Deccan, having left Chinchwad early in the morning. They said she was employed with a private firm in Chinchwad.

PSI M N Walekar of the Khadki police station said, "Amrin was on her Scooty when she lost her balance and hit the divider and fell on the other side of the road. She came under the rear wheel of a PMPML bus on the Nigdi route. According to the post-mortem report, death was due to severe head injury".

Locals alleged that Amrin would have been alive if the height of the road divider had been more. As it was low, they said she fell on the other side of the road and came under the wheels of the bus.

In a third accident, four members of a family on a motorbike were hit by a truck at Pirangut near Paud. One of them died and three were injured. The deceased was identified as Ajinkya Landage (7), while his father Laxman sustained injuries on his leg. Ajinkya's mother and three-year-old brother received multiple injuries and are they are undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital. The truck driver was identified as Adam Babulal Shaikh, a resident of Sus in Mulshi, and the police said he was caught by the public. Shaikh was also injured in the accident.
