A 28-year-old murder accused allegedly committed suicide inside Tihar Jail canteen by hanging himself from the ceiling on 13 September. Police and jail authorities are yet to ascertain the reasons behind the extreme step.
Tihar spokesperson Sunil Bhatia said the inmate, identified as Prem Kumar, was lodged in jail number 8 for the last one month. He said Kumar's body was found around 11 pm. The authorities immediately informed the Hari Nagar police station in this regard.

A police official, on the condition of anonymity, said Kumar had been arrested in connection with a murder case of a youth by Anand Vihar police. The murder case was reported on 15 August. "He was also involved in around half dozen crime cases. He was earlier booked for robbery, theft and arms possession. He was rushed to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival," said the official. He further said the deceased did not leave any suicide note. Meanwhile, Bhatia informed that Kumar used his trousers to make the noose, to hang himself.
In the nick of time
Meanwhile, in another incident reported from Tihar Jail, an FIR was lodged against an inmate for allegedly trying to commit suicide inside the jail premises. The inmate was identified as Raje. A police official said Raje had tried to commit suicide in August but the FIR was registered just two days ago. According to a Tihar source, Raje was a trial prisoner and had been lodged in Central jail number 1.
"He was arrested by Sadar Bazar police in connection with a murder case and lodged along with three other inmates. On 19 August, at the time of tea distribution, he was found hanging by the neck by jail-warden Anand Prakash, who immediately reported the matter. Raje was then rushed to the jail dispensary and then sent to DDU hospital. A wireless message was also flashed by Tihar officials in this respect," said the Tihar source.
