Their name seems to be a crossover between Star Trek and an American freeway drive-through. Hidden away in a dark lane, but with a famous neighbour who ensures sufficient footfall, The Bonnet is a two-level 'Resto Bar and Lounge'.

Walk into their basement space (which is the bar and lounge area) and you will know that the owners are four-wheeler fans. The bar comes with bright red love-angles, seats that have been shaped like car seats and bar stools that have tyres under their cushions. Order from their very reasonably priced Indian or foreign liquor or opt for a cocktail (all under Rs 500).

Then, make your way upstairs to the era of vintage cars. Here, there are booths with seats for four, complete with miniature doors that you have to unlock to get in. The menu is divided into what we easily term, Continental and Indian.

We began with a Soup of the Day (Rs 65). On the cold winter night, the clear chicken soup took us back to the warmth of grandma's broth. This was followed by the Bonnet Mega Burger (Rs 85), which promised to be a four-layered delight. Four layers there sure were but none of them actually lifted the very ordinary burger. The huge bun came heaped with a tiny chicken patty, a layer of cheese and a fried egg. We are wondering whether we are supposed to assume the salad leaf, cucumber and tomato to be the fourth layer? We also asked for a Fish Tempura, but unfortunately our server forgot all about it and rolled our mains in.

First came the Louis-Hot Plate (Rs 265). Though the menu claimed the dish would have batter-fried fish, ours was a delicious simple fillet on a bed of mashed potatoes and sauted vegetables in a de riguer brown sauce (again, not as exotic as the menu claimed).

Moving to the Indian section, we tried the Mutton Rahara (Rs 175) and were delighted with the thick, minced gravy that came with succulent pieces of meat. Finally, it was time for the Murg Biryani (Rs 155) ufffd boneless chunks of chicken and rice that had the right blend of spice and herbs. For dessert, we tried butterscotch (Rs 95) that came in a lovely glass ice-cream cone. Sprinkled with nuts and drizzled with chocolate sauce, a little more would have been much appreciated.

The service had a few teething issues but was friendly, with both the owners dropping in to ensure that all was well. The Bonnet scores for its ambience, value-for-money pricing and the passion of the people behind it.

at Imperial Residence, Kalyani Nagar. Lounge is open from 12 pm to 11 pm and the restaurant is open from 12 pm to 4 pm and 7 pm to 11 pmu00a0
