Beer lovers are warned to keep away from pubs to avoid contracting swine flu, or stick to brandy or rum with warm water. Experts say the H1N1 virus proliferates in low temperatures at which beverages are stored and served. "Humid environs, especially ones that experience sub-zero temperatures at which beer is stored and served, are ideal for the viruses, including those of the H1N1 strain to proliferate. A simple cold or cough can make one vulnerable to a viral attack. So, it is advisable to stay away from chilled beer. If you must drink, have brandy rum or whisky with warm water," said Dr Avinash Bhondve, former president of Indian Medical association, Pune.

Tyrus Damania, manager of Curve, a popular watering hole, said he message has already reached regular pub hoppers. "The party scene has taken an interesting turn in the last one week. People are playing it safe because of swine flu. Most of them are cutting down on beer and prefer brandy or a peg of whisky. We do serve patrons chilled beer, when we are asked to do so." Saurabh Bhatt, a media professional, said, he has temporarily given up beer for wine and brandy. "I had a little cough a few days back, which made me give up beer. I am sticking to brandy for the time being because it really helps me warm myself and ward off the cough."

Sandy Singh, owner of resto-bar North Main Mediterranean, however, said, beer sales continue to be high.

"While we are selling other beverages as well, beer continues to occupy top slot," said Singh.

Aryan Chouhan, an MBA student, is among those who refuse to be parted with their mugs of chilled beers swine flu notwithstanding. "I have not cut down on beer, but am also taking rum and whisky now. I hope the government does not ban beer in view of the swine flu situation."
