Meeran Borwankar says she admires spirit of women in city

Commissioner of Police Meeran Borwankar admires the spirit of the women in the city. And as she particularly likes their solution for protection from the elements while enjoying the freedom two-wheelers give them, she has decided not to ban the covering of the face with scarves by women riders.

There was a controversy over the use of headscarves when Borwankar's predecessor Dr Satyapal Singh had objected to it, stating terrorists could enter the city without getting noticed in this manner.

"I respect Dr Satyapal Singh's opinion, but an opinion is (only) an opinion," said Borwankar.

Borwankar said she liked the spirit of the city, especially of its women. "I am a Puneite in a uniform," said Borwankar.

It may be recalled that Singh had announced a ban on scarves after taking charge as the commissioner of police on September 14, 2008.

Singh's decision had met with strong opposition from several women's organisations. Now, women's organisations have welcomed Borwankar's decision. "The new police ccommissioner has a positive attitude.

There is one more issue Pune women have, and that is safety," said Kiran Moghe of the Janawadi Mahila Sanghatan. "With her attitude, I am sure she'll be able to tackle the law and order situation in the city."
