Residents of Navi Vasahat in Katraj were woken from their routine nap on a quiet Sunday afternoon only to see the most unbelievable sight. A truck overloaded with fish had rammed into two of the houses, crushing a car and two autorickshaws parked outside and trapping eight residents in the two houses.
Close shave
The incident took place at 4.30 pm at Navi Vasahat on the Katraj-Kondhwa road under construction. Ashok Machale, who narrowly escaped being injured, said, "I had stepped out only seconds before to buy coffee when I saw a truck having trouble climbing the steep ascent and coming towards our locality in reverse gear.
Confused as to what to do I shouted and asked the truck driver to halt. But within seconds it rammed straight inside."
Deepak Jadhav, Machale's relative who was visiting his place, said, "We heard a loud cracking noise and saw the rickshaw parked outside come ramming inside Machale's house."
On the other side of Machale's house, Dudhekar's house suffered a similar fate when the truck hit a Maruti van parked outside and sent it ramming into their house. Dudhekar's wife, Ananta, sustained back injures and was rushed to a hospital for treatment.
According to Jadhav, all the residents of Navi Vasahat responded to the help calls of those trapped inside and helped them to come out.
Commenting on the horrible accident, API Sampant Kale said, "The truck was travelling from Kondhwa towards Katraj and was laden with fish. The truck (AP 16 TW 4369) driver lost control on the steep slope and consequently rammed into two houses of Navi Vasahat."
The truck driver Shrinivas Ramdut Ramdasurao (38) of Yellur, Laxmi Varadpeth, RTA, West Godavari, AP, was arrested under IPC 279 for negligent driving and IPC 337 and IPC 427.
