UPSC interviews in regional languages

Getting selected to the elite bureaucratic circles of the country might just get easier for lakhs of aspirants in the country.u00a0 All over the country, civil service candidates can now appear for their personality test interview in any recognised regional language of their choice.

In response to a PIL filed by civil services aspirant Chittaranjan Kumar in the Bombay High Court in 2008, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) filed an affidavit in the high court stating interviews would be conducted in official Indian regional languages besides Hindi and English.

The UPSC interview, which is the final leg of selection after an exhaustive series of written exams, is considered to be one of the most challenging in the country. Candidates are then selected for various services like Indian Foreign Service, Indian Administrative Service, and Indian Police Service, among others. Two written exams, the preliminary and the mains, are first held after which candidates proceed to the interview stage.

The UPSC already had a provision for candidates to appear for written exams in any officially recognised regional language. The new rule will make it easier for students from various states since they can now interact with the interviewers in their mother tongue.
