An unclaimed handbag in the domestic arrival area of the Chennai airport created some tense moments before security personnel took it away for inspection today.
The handbag was spotted beside some trolleys near Gate Number 2 by CISF personnel manning the airport, CISF sources said, adding, it was removed from the spot and taken away for inspection.
There were additional security personnel at the airport owing to the flow of VIPs and others arriving here after attending the funeral of former President A P J Abdul Kalam at Rameswaram, the sources said.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, B S Yeddyurappa, the former CM of that state and BJP Tamil Nadu unit president Tamilisai Soundarajan were among those who arrived here.
In Punjab's district headquarter town of Gurdaspur, the recovery of an abandoned polythene bag near a private school on Thursday afternoon led to a bomb scare and the entire area being cordoned off, police said.
The bag was found in a lane adjoining the DAV School in Gurdaspur, 210 km from Chandigarh.
The entire area, which is close to the local bus stand, was cordoned off and bomb disposal units were requisitioned to probe the suspicious packet.
"We cannot say anything at this moment. We are investigating the matter," a Punjab Police officer said.
The bomb scare came just four days after a terror strike in nearby Dinanagar town in Gurdaspur district on Monday. Seven people, including a police officer, three home guard personnel and three civilians, were killed in the incident.
