An unemployed man was arrested in Himachal Pradesh for trying to offer his head to appease a Hindu goddess and get blessed with a job, police said.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Paras Ram told IANS that Raj Kumar, 22, of Fatehpur in Uttar Pradesh reached the Jwalaji temple, some 200 km from state capital Shimla, Tuesday.

"In the morning Kumar tried to cut off his head in front of the idol with a sword. Temple officials and devotees overpowered him and foiled his attempt. But he managed to slit his throat," he said.

Kumar was admitted to Rajendra Prasad Medical College and Hospital in Tanda, some 75 from the incident spot.

The police have registered a case against the man.
