On Sunday afternoon, Commissioner of Delhi police BK Gupta and Chandigarh IGP P Srivasatav conducted a press conference where they praised the co-operation between the forces of the two states. They had arrested seven out of eight accused from Pilahua area of UP last night but surprisingly none of the officers in the UP police was informed about those raids and arrests. Surprised and shocked, UP police officials rushed to Delhi to gather some information about the accused.
"We wanted information about the accused as their modus operandi was similar to those who had committed crime in the Indirapuram area two moths ago. As we were not informed, we are not able to question the accused. Now we will have to wait till they are granted judicial custody in Chandigarh and only then can we bring them on transit remand," said a UP police official on conditions of anonymity. The UP police seemed to have got the information about the incident only through television as some of the cops sought help of reporters at the press conference to get a press release and access the information about the accused.
On being asked why the information about the accused was not shared with the UP police as the arrests were made in UP, DCP (South Delhi) HGS Dhaliwal bluntly said that there was no such requirement. "There is no such legal requirement to inform the state police before such raids. As it is, we didn't have much time to discuss things with UP police because we feared that by that time the accused might escape. So without wasting our time, we just went ahead " said Dhaliwal. On the night of January 11, Tanishq showroom in Mani Majra area in Chandigarh was attacked by 12 people, some of them in the police uniforms. After overpowering the guards and tying them up, they broke through the store and ran away with the valuables.
"On a tip off, our south district team along with Chandigarh police arrested one accused named Bhura Qureshi from Vasant Kunj. Some stolen jewellery was found from his possession. During questioning, he accepted his involvement in the crime and divulged that he along with Paras Soni and 10 others had committed this robbery in Chandigarh.
Based on the Qureshi's information, a joint team of Delhi and Chandigarh police carried out a raid inu00a0 Pilahua area of UP and arrested the robbery mastermind Paras along with his brother Manav and five othersu00a0 and recovered stolen jewellery worth Rs 12 crore, Rs 2.5 lakh cash and other incriminating documents from them," said Gupta. The police also recovered 1000 mobile phones and accessories worth Rs 1 crore. These mobile phones were stolen in a separate incident of burglary at mobile godown in Kundli, on Delhi/Haryana Border.
