Madikal is about 60 km from Udupi and 400 km from Bangalore.
Police said, the vandals entered the mosque on Sunday night by breaking open the lock.u00a0They threw things around including the Holy Koran, broke furniture and damaged electrical equipment, a complaint filed by the mosque management said.
Microphones and other equipment belonging to the mosque were also found near the seashore. President of the Mosque Managing Committee, Nizam, said they came to know about the damage when the people visited the mosque to perform namaz on Monday morning. "We smelt kerosene. Since no Muslim resides near the mosque, it did not come to light till then," he said.
Jamaat members convened a meeting and filed a police complaint.
Circle inspector Kantaraj and station house officer Yogish Kumar have camped at the site. Additional reserve police have been posted at sensitive areas.
The century-old mosque, which is visited by around 25 to 30 families living in Uppunda-Madikal, was targeted by miscreants in 1992 too.
