Andheri's latest cafe is marred by a bumpy approach, and average food. What's on suggests you stick to Cappuccino at a coffee chain

With a name like Art Cafe, you'd expect an eatery that's lively, if not aesthetic. But this cafe that claims to go beyond art and coffee doesn't end up doing either. Located at a crossroad away from New Link Road, this one looks like a cosy nook from a distance.

Ambience: The trouble begins at the approach road. It's an invisible incline that feels like a speed breaker that was abandoned mid-way through construction. The absence of streetlights doesn't help either. And then, just when you've got comfortable, the cacophony of other vehicles crashing into the same "half-speed breaker" can ruin any trace of an intimate conversation.u00a0

The art shop next door, with its Buddha paintings, wrought iron lampshades, murals and garments, is the only saving grace.

Food: The menu is a limited one sandwiches, rolls and savouries jostle for space with desserts in the display area. We tried the Veg Puff (Rs 15), Smoked Chicken Mayo Roll (40) and Exotic Vegetable Classic Sandwich (Rs 30). The puff tasted like a Monginis counterpart, while the "exotic" in the Veg Sandwich was restricted to bell peppers. The Honey and Walnut Pie (Rs 40) was loaded with enough honey to make it Winnie the Pooh's favourite dessert.

With all that was wrong with the food and ambience, there's not much the attendants could do to help, though they were as polite as could be. Just one thing: they should stop asking customers if they'd like their food heated. If it's not a take-away, so, isn't that obvious?
