A clutch of galleries in South Mumbai's art district are throwing open their doors on the fourth Sunday of every month, starting today


It's the best gift SoBo galleries could have given the art lover, short of presenting them with a free painting off their walls.

Starting today, 10 art galleries will stay open on the fourth Sunday of every monthu00a0u00a0 in a bid to engage with visitors. Colaba and Fort known as the art district of Mumbai, due to the presence of several art galleries, including those that date back several decades, and the reputed Jehangir Art Gallery. At present, a majority of the galleries exhibitu00a0 new media works.

Galleries participating in this venture, titled Art 4 Sunday: Celebrating Art, include Project 88, Mumbai Art Room, Gallery Maskara, Chatterjee & Lal, Lakeeren, Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke, Sakshi Gallery, Gallery Beyond,u00a0 and Chemould Prescott Road. Most of these galleries are located along Causeway and in Fortu00a0-- all accessible with a leisurely stroll on the wide, traffic-less roads on Sunday. Start your yatra at Project 88, located near the Fire Brigade station in Colaba, where you can see artist Priya Sen's first solo exhibition in the city, titled Place Unconsidered, Trilogy. Then make your way across the road to visit newly opened nonprofit gallery Mumbai Art Room to see Nathalie Djurberg's 10-minute claymation video titled I Found Myself Alone. Watch printmaker-artist T Venkanna use Gallery Maskara as his personal studio, in a unique exhibition cum open studio experiment, before heading off to Lakeeren, to view a group photography exhibition titled The Second Sex: Feminist Photography on the Cusp. Stroll over to Fort to view Jyoti Dogra's multimedia piece based on Kafka's writings at Gallery Beyond.

Sakshi Gallery and Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke are holding group exhibitions of paintings.

Timing: 11 am to 5 pm
Chatterjee & Lal and Chemould will remain closed this Sunday.
