The Congress and the government yesterday came to the defence of Home Minister P Chidambaram after the Opposition demanded his resignation over the 2G scam, and stoutly denied any "rift" in the government.
"The party does not doubt his (Chidambaram's) integrity," said Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi.

And even as the Bharatiya Janata Partyu00a0 seized the opportunity and sought the immediate resignation of Chidambaram, sources said Manmohan Singh had reassured his home minister of his trust and spoke with Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, also in the US.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi in the meanwhile was also briefed on the matter and was expected to take it up when the prime minister returns to the capital on Monday, after attending the UN General Assembly, Congress sources said.
