Mahender Singh, 27, Kulwant Singh alias Kale, 25, Kulwant alias Gole, 22, and Charanjit Singh were arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police on Tuesday. The four desperados were involved in a series of robberies and thefts at temples across the city.
The quartet used to work on weekends, as majority of devotees throng to temples on these days and consequently the offerings swell. The police said while Mahender and the two Kulwants used to do all the legwork, Charanjit was incharge of selling the booty.
"We had received a tip off that the gang would come to Shahpura to dispose off the stolen items. We arrested them in the evening while they were handing out the stolen goods to Charanjit. They used to work in a planned manner. First a target was identified and before executing the plan the geography of the temple was known inside out to each gang member," a police official said. With their arrest, the police claimed to have worked out at least four temple burglary cases that occurred over last two months.
Mahender was residing in Tilak Nagar while Kale was staying in Rohini Sector-III and Gole in Chander Vihar.
