It is believed that a week ago, Shivakumar had leaked information on mistreatment of funds collected by state Congress for flood relief to media, to settle a score with the state party president RV Deshpande.

It's also believed thatu00a0 Congress high command is mulling over replacing Deshpande with a more acceptable leader.

"Shivakumar has created a prickly situation for himself and hence, he wont be able to continue with the party.

Also, his proximity with BJP leaders is quite evident. We won't be surprised to see him in the rival camp," said a senior Congress leader.

Meanwhile, some highly placed sources in the Congress said that the party high command is mulling over replacing Deshpande with a more acceptable leader, while giving Shivakumar the boot.

Internal polls in the party are scheduled for the next month, which will give the high command a leeway to elect new state president.

Speaking to MiD DAY, Deshpande said, "Even I believe that there should be a change of leadership, as one can not stick to the same position for years. I'm ready to step down if the high command asks me to do so."

When asked about the rumours of Shivakumar leaving the party, he refused to comment. However, he said that one should not spare mischief mongers who could betray the party for their personal gains.

Meanwhile, Shivakumar rubbished the rumours. "Why should I leave the party that I have toiled hard to build?" he questioned.

Adding further, he said, "I may even become the state president when the party polls are held next month. There are a few people who are just trying to sabotage my image."
