In-laws allegedly meted out mental torture to the 25-year-old for not practicing family's customs

Following alleged mental torture meted by in-laws, Shilpa Rao (25), committed suicide at her residence in Manjunath Nagar last night. A postgraduate in Mathematics, Shilpa hanged herself from the ceiling fan at 9.30 pm.

She had returned from Mysore, her maternal home, around 7.30 pm yesterday. After reaching home, Shilpa had an argument with her husband Anant Rao, a software engineer, after which she took the extreme step.

According to cops, there used to be frequent fights between the deceased and her in-laws. She was allegedly forced to practice the orthodox way of life, something she wasn't comfortable with.

Speaking to MiD DAY, Anant's father said, "We had some differences, as she was a bit modern and never followed our custom and traditions."

He added that due to regular squabbles, Shilpa and Anant moved out in April this year.

Dr Nagaraj, Shilpa's uncle, alleged that her husband and in-laws mentally tortured her. "She was a nice girl. We never thought that things would turn so bad that she'll have to end her life."

C Puttaraju, ASI from Basaveshwar Nagar police station, said, "We were informed about the suicide at 10 pm.

When we reached the spot, we found the woman hanging from the ceiling fan." He added, "As we didn't find any suicide note, we don't know the reason why she ended her life."

Ironically, Shilpa's body was left hanging for more than seven hours. According to Puttaraju, her body will be brought down only after a case is registered.

"We can remove her body only after her parents reach here and register a case. Then we'll get the tehsildar and remove the body in his presence," said Puttaraju.

Sad Ending...

The couple had a love-cum-arranged marriage. They had met in a function four years ago where they fell for each other.

Though Anant's family was against the marriage, they later gave in. But soon after the marriage, Shilpa's in-laws allegedly started forcing their way of life on her.
