Without consent
Suma had married Madhukumar (27) of Chagalatti, after a five-year-long courtship, without his parents' consent.
His parents were against the marriage and had even threatened to kill both of them. However, the
two got married and settled in Bagalur police limits.
Madhukumar's parents used to threaten Suma when Madhukumar was not around.
Madhukumar's mother had given Rs 13 lakh to her brother Nagappa, who had promised to double the amount if Madhukumar married his daughter. But when Madhukumar got to know about this, he married Suma.
Unhappy
After three months, Madhukumar and Suma returned and settled with their relatives. But Nagappa was still unhappy with Suma.
Two-years-ago Suma gave birth to a boy, and things changed a little. Things had started to look up for the
couple.
In trouble
Problems started when Madhukumar and Nagappa jointly bought a mini-truck. They lost a large sum in the business, and Nagappa asked Madhukumar for money, but was refused.
Nagappa and Madhukumar's family had a dispute with Suma, on July 22.
After three days, Nagappa and his two friends enteredu00a0 Madhukumar's residence, and splashed petrol on Suma and set her on fire.
After hearing her screams for help, neighbours rushed Suma to a hospital. She was being treated for severe burn injuries, for the last three days. But the injuries proved fatal, and she breathed her last yesterday morning.
Bagalur PI Babu Anjinappa said, "The in-laws harassed Suma, and then killed her. Though they are absconding, we are looking for them."
