Successful allottees in the scam-hit DDA housing scheme say they are being penalised for others' fraud

Shattered: Ujjwal Ramneek one of the successful aspirants of DDA scheme

Ujjwal Ramneek thanked his stars the day he got a flat in the DDA's housing scheme-2008.

A feat rare in view of the fact that over five lakh people had applied for the scheme, which offered flats at much lower than the prevalent market price.

But, a dream realized for Ujjwal may go sour. With the DDA deciding to delay indefinitely the allotment of flats in view of the allegations of rigging in the draw of lots, the allottees are a worried lot.

"If they cancel the allotments, luck may not favour me again. It is unfair. Why should we, who have got the flats by fair means, pay for the bad deeds of others?" asked the 35-year-old, who got a flat at Rohini Sector-28.

"We will not tolerate this. If they cancel allotments we will move the court. They are playing with emotions of thousands of people," he said.

The allottees have made up their minds to take legal action and not to surrender to the DDA.

"We are going to meet the DDA officials tomorrow. We will make it clear that that we are not going to surrender, if they cancel the allotment. We are open to any scrutiny," said Sampat Rai, who got a flat at Rohini Sector-16 in the draw of lots.

"If we have to move court we will have to face problems. We are being made scapegoats," Sampat added.

A DDA official did not return the call, when MiD DAY tried to reach him for a comment.

The DDAu00a0 schemeu00a0 was launched onu00a0 August 3, 2008 and closed on September 16, 2008. 12.64 lakh applications were receivedu00a0 for 5,238 flats. Which was to be allotted at a draw of lots on December 16.u00a0

Soon the allegations of fraud pertain mostly to the allotment of 25 per cent of the 5,238 flats reserved for those belonging to scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, war widows and those physically challenged.

The authority and the bank appointed by it to act on its behalf are accused of not scrutinising the application forms adequately.

Soon after, allegations of fraud and rigging surfaced.

The urban ministry has now threatened to cancel the allotmentsu00a0all of themu00a0if the police found large-scale irregularities.
