MCD launches drive to keep city clean. Plans to embarrass citizens to give up unclean habits

What type of a Delhiite are you? Thu Thu Kumar, Su Su Kumar or Polyu00a0 auntie?

This is how the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) plans to divide citizens, according to their civic sense, in its new campaign to cleanu00a0 the city.

Elaborating on the campaign, Delhi Mayor Kanwar Sain said, "We have prepared 600 signboards with messages related to cleanliness. These will be displayed to educate people."

While the hoardings and signboards have already been put up at over 600 strategic locations, the second part of the campaign on television and radio will be launched within a month, the mayor said.

The campaign will ask people not to urinate and spit in public and not to throw garbage in the open.

Embarrass and change

Interestingly, the campaign has been designed not only to inform but to rectify people as well. Through the campaign, the MCD plans to embarrass those who dirty the city. The campaign will include catchy slogans like, "Thu Thu Kumar na bane (Don't spit in public)," "Su Su Kumar na bane (Do not urinate in public places)" and for those who litter the city, the message is "Poly auntie na bane (Do not be the person who throws polythene packets in public)."

"We have created the advertisements so that those who do not care about hygiene feel embarrassed. We hope it will go a long way in making people realize that the city is theirs and they should care for it," said the mayor.

Apart from the advertisements, the MCD plans to deploy sanitary inspectors to fine those who indulge in such activities.

However, the mayor said people will be fined only if the advertisements don't work. "I strongly believe the campaign will have a strong impact. But if required, inspectors will be deployed. The government has already passed an anti-littering law," said Sain.

Meanwhile, citizens are welcoming the campaign. Commenting on the drive, public relations guru Dilip Cherian said, "It is very good that such a campaign has been launched by the civic body. The Pappu campaign during Delhi polls on the same lines was a huge success too. However, the humour should impact people."
