All Stars, a musical ensemble connected solely by passion will rock the city with some known and some unheard of tracks

What happens if you take an award winning jazz vocalist, a freedom loving guitarist, a percussionist who was on his way to stardom since the age of two (inspired by none else than Ringo Star) and Rock/Fusion/Acid Jazz bassist and let them loose on stage?

Steve Zelin

Get starry eyed this weekend with a live act of All Stars. What's in store for the evening you wonder? Well, exactly how a Sunday should be like - a cross of great grooves and some sparkling melodies.

All Stars, a collaboration of Natalie John (vocals), Steve Zerlin (guitar), Ed Degenaro (bass) and Atma Anur (drums) is a trained and acclaimed set of musicians from different parts of the world with different backgrounds and a passion for creating a unique fusion of music of different genres.

Natalie, recipient of the John Coltrane award and the Downbeat Award for college jazz vocalist, met Prasanna, the director of Swarnabhoomi Music Academy (SAM) in 2008 in Canada. When offered a chance to work in India at the academy she didn't think twice about the chance to explore possibilities of blending the South Indian Carnatic tradition with modern pop and rock.

Steve, who has previously played in Chennai in the presence of legends such as Illayaraja and John McGlaughlin, says that he always intends to bring 200 percent to any live performance and has very fond, unforgettable memories of each individual show he has played so far.

He has also collaborated with Subash Chandran, Ganesh Kumar, Sandip Burman and Prasanna. Ed, who is famous for his fretless guitar playing skills, originally hails from Germany and has collaborated withu00a0 Dave Weckl (Chick Corea), Chuck Rainey (Steely Dan), Ric Fierabracci (Chick Corea) to name a few on his latest record 'Less Is Seldom More'. His band is called the Ed DeGenaro Group.

Atma on the other hand studied classical percussion and Jazz performance at Berklee but would describe his musical taste as a broad mix of modern and contemporary styles like fusion, reggae, pop, and R&B. Atma who was surrounded by all kinds of West Indian (Caribbean), and funky British and American music as a kid, explains, "Mahavishnu Orchestra was the biggest influence on my musical development till I got to college.

"Today, Atma lives in Poland where he teaches at the Krakow Jazz School and the International Summer Jazz Academy. All four artists derive inspiration from each other and plan on producing some real lively, energetic, soulful music, since they have been working together.

Looking forward to the show this weekend they have more such acts planned through the year. The ensemble has a variety of material planned for the listeners and Natalie has a special message for music lovers, "Be prepared to have a great time listening to new music and be ready for a surprise with some songs you may know and love".
