COVIDWith 15,968 new Coronavirus infections reported in the last 24 hours, India continued its streak of low cases, with the overall tally mounting to 1,04,95,147, officials said on Wednesday. On Tuesday, India recorded 12,584 new cases, lowest single-day figure in over seven months. Before this, the lowest number was recorded on June 18 last year, when India reported 12,881 fresh COVID cases in a day.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said 202 deaths were reported in the past 24 hours taking the death toll to 1,51,529. Since the last 19 days, less than 300 new deaths per day have been recorded in the country. As per the Ministry data, till now, 1,01,29,111 people have recovered. Currently, there are 2,14,507 active cases. About 43.96 per cent of patients with active infection are in healthcare facilities, while the rest are in home isolation. The recovery rate stands at 96.51 per cent while the fatality rate is 1.44 as per cent.
The total number of samples tested up to January 12 were 18,34,89,114 including 8,36,227 samples tested on Tuesday, the Indian Council of Medical Research said. About 70 per cent of the daily new cases are reported from seven states.
Delhi schools to open for Std X, XII
The Delhi government on Wednesday allowed schools in the national capital to reopen for Std X and XII from January 18 in view of board exams, according to officials of the Directorate of Education. Students will attend schools only with consent of parents and physical attendance is not compulsory, while schools will follow all COVID-19 guidelines, they said.
Movie theatres open up in Kerala
The movie theatres in Kerala, which were shut for around 10 months owing to COVID restrictions opened on Wednesday. Over 500 of the total 670 theatres opened to the public. South Indian super star Vijay’s movie, ‘Master’, is the inaugural movie in all the theatres in the state. However in certain theatres, owing to projector equipment complaints, the show was put on hold. Apsara theatre in Kozhikode cancelled the 9 am and 2 pm shows owing to a projector complaints, thereby disappointing a huge number of fans who had gathered in the theatre.
Total 102 people test positive for UK strain
The number of people in India who have tested positive for the new United Kingdom variant of Coronavirus has climbed to 102, the Union Health Ministry said on Wednesday. Till January 11, the number of people affected by this strain of the Coronavirus was 96. On Wednesday, the ministry said, “The total number of people found to be positive with the new UK variant genome stands at 102 today.” All these people were kept in single-room isolation in designated healthcare facilities by respective state governments.
SpiceJet transports 3.5 tonnes of vaccine
SpiceJet said it transported 3.5 tonnes of COVID-19 vaccines on Wednesday from Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad to 11 cities across. The movement of COVID-19 vaccines began on Tuesday morning. The shots will be used in the vaccination drive beginning Saturday. “On January 13, 2021, SpiceJet shipped 111 boxes of COVID-19 vaccine, weighing 3.5 tonnes from Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad to 11 cities including Bagdogra, Dehradun, Srinagar, Jammu, Kanpur, Gorakhpur, Jabalpur, Ranchi, Rajkot, Delhi and Bengaluru,” the airline said in a statement. The carrier said its freighter flight SG7555 operating from Hyderabad to Bengaluru took-off at 8.50 am with a consignment of Covaxin weighing 90 kg.
