Taking another step towards e-transformation, the university is planning to conduct its Combined Aptitude Test for English (CATE) online from the next academic session.

File photo</td></tr></tbody></table> The English Department has written to the Institute of Lifelong Learning (ILLL), requesting to prepare required software for taking the test online. Prof. A K Bakshi, Director of ILLL said, "The online exam is a part of DU's larger plan to go the e-learning way. We have been in regular touch with the university to make the plan successful. Final decision will be taken after a meeting with the English Department, which is scheduled for Tuesday. The vice-chancellor of the university is enthusiastic about the online exam system." The biggest challenge of the online formats is to guarantee question papers with the same level of difficulty.u00a0 "To set question paper is the most difficult task. We have to make sure that it match the level of students taking the exam and their aptitude is properly tested.u00a0 We also have to see that we do justice to every students," said Prof. Bakshi The first ever-common entrance test conducted by English Department in DU for English (Hons) aspirants, was held on June 17 at 12 colleges this year. Approximately 6,700 students had appeared for the test for the 350 available seats in DU colleges. The number of students is expected to touch almost 10,000 next year.u00a0 u00a0ILL has been working on making the entire teaching process and the assessment process more tech-savvy. It is expected that by the next academic session, the e-learning material for some courses like Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Life Sciences and Commerce will be uploaded on the ILLL portal. This year DU became one of the first central universities in the country to conduct an online examination for its undergraduate science students. A total of 2,500 students from 27 colleges took their environmental science paper of the B.Sc course online. Earlier in the month of September, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) also approached ILLL to help them in conducting their internal semester exams online.
