A private firm, which is organising the G20 meetings in Goa, has sent a defamation notice of Rs 25 crore to Mario Gallery that is dedicated to the work of artist Mario de Miranda, reported O Heraldo, a Goa-based newspaper.

On July 7, Mario Gallery sent a legal notice to Sean AdEvent for installing figurines of Miranda’s famous cartoons for G20 without seeking their permission. The event management company sent a counter notice on July 10, claiming the gallery didn’t own rights over Miranda’s work.

“They even said that the artwork does not belong to Mario and have demanded Rs 25 crore because we defamed them... Everybody takes permission...the Indian Navy, the Airport Authority, the Income Tax Department all of them take permission,” Scroll.in quoted gallery’s curator Gerard Da Cunha as saying.

The gallery had given Sean AdEvent seven days to remove the installations in Old Goa, the Goa University and at the NIO Circle.

“I don’t think the agency or the government has any intention to remove those figurines. The G20 next meeting is also scheduled in the coming week,” he told O Heraldo.
