The Indian Council of Medical Research-National Institute of Virology (ICMR-NIV), Pune, has reported a case of three-time COVID-19 infection in an individual who was vaccinated with Covishield.

The healthcare professional from Delhi had primary SARS-CoV2 infection, breakthrough infection with Delta and re-infection with Omicron over a period 16 months, researchers of Pune NIV said in a study.

Its findings prove the immune evasion potential of the Omicron variant, even after infection and vaccination, they said. The researchers said the 38-year-old had first got COVID-19 during the first on October 9, 2020. He tested positive again in November 2021. During the third wave, the individual again tested positive on January 24, 2022. The patient received the first dose of Covishield vaccine on January 31, 2021, and the second dose on March 3.

The scientists concluded saying the fight against COVID-19 is far from over. Although vaccine boosters or third doses have shown an augmentation in the immune response against, it has been found to wane over time.

‘Stay alert’

With several festivals coming up, PM Narendra Modi on Sun-day urged people to stay alert and continue to follow COVID-19 safety norms.

4,30,57,545 Total no. of Coronavirus cases in india so far
5,22,193 Total no. of deaths due to the virus in India so far

‘Avoid wastage, use 10 crore free doses’

The Serum Institute of India has urged the Centre to use the available 10 crore Covishield doses offered free of cost by GAVI under COVAX facility in view of rising COVID-19, an official source said. If these free doses are not used on time, it will lead to wastage of the vaccines, it said.
